Mastering the English language has become an obligation for most Portuguese speakers. Merely communicating is already an improvement. Still, communicating accurately is more than welcome. Enjoy and make the most of the knowledge at your display.

I´d rather use belly button instead of navel... sounds cute!
Navel x belly button:
first: frequency:
navel: 8.790.000
belly button: 4.470.000
Both are acceptable and perfectly understood in any part of the world. Still, you are not likely to find the word "belly button" in medical articles nor in a magazine or newspaper article, unless it's relevant to indicate a degree of informality.
On the other hand, distinguishing those words in terms of formal and informal would be inaccurate.
Just as Monalisa has said "belly button" sounds cuter or maybe that's the word I would use with someone I know or my kids, in a joke, in a story, etc.
The best paradigm would be the vrebs pee and piss.
i wrote a coment about the expression "pull".
check it out, andré.
